Science Says

Simon Says?

Remember playing "Simon Says"? Wasn't it fun trying to get other kids to do silly things like "jumping jacks" and wiggle their ears so they don't get caught missing any instructions officially coming from whoever is "Simon" for the moment.

Science can become like that, too. Scientists can become very selfish and demand that everyone who doesn't submit to their rules be banished from the "game". When scientists begin to abuse their position of power and prestige within the "community of scientists", the become "pseudoscientists".

Pseudoscience is a designation for anything pretending to be scientific, or perhaps representing the scientific establishment, but in fact intended to make a political or social statement without having any empirical or logical substance behind it.

That being the case, nothing may be labeled "pseudoscience" unless there is "absolutely no" logical or empirical substance presented to back it up. Such as "straw man" attacks which attempt to discredit legitimate science by presenting lengthly essays attempting to expose their "political incorrectness" or supposed "religious bias".

Politics Versus Science

1. Science doesn't really "say" anything. It is supposed to be totally objective, that is "neutral" on any subject of study. Scientists my make "conclusions" based on "evidence of findings" which are only "suggestions". Everyone is free to draw their own conclusions as well.

2. Science is not a society or political institution. Nor is it a "party" or "club". It is simply an objective study of any topic, nothing more.

3. Science is not the "savior of humanity and the environment". It is nothing more then a way to understand things a little better.

4. In "science" there are never any "official statements" or "pet assumptions". You start with a prior understanding of a subject and attempt to expand that understanding always remembering that the prior understanding may be wrong.

4. "Polititics" is the practice of manipulating the public for the purpose of gaining power and social status. The usefulness of "science" can be measured in the extent to which "scientists" can remain free of any political influences in their studies.
